It perceives man as a Microcosm of the universe, and as a part of one unbroken whole-ness called “Tao’, which says all things in the universe depend and act to keep in harmony with nature. “Tao” consists of two opposite yet complementary energies namely the Yin (negative) and Yang (positive). It is essential to keep these two energies (life energy called Qi for human being) in balance or disease would be developed.
Another TCM theory is called Five Elements Theory. The five elements are WOOD, FIRE, EARTH, METAL and WATER. Everything in the universe can be classified into one of the five elements by its nature. For example, kidney belongs to water and heart belongs to fire. Water controls fire and fire consumes water. Insomnia is usually caused by the imbalance of kidney and heart.
